DELE A1 Exam Overview

The DELE A1 exam is the first official Spanish certification for complete beginners. It checks whether you can understand and use simple, everyday Spanish. Our DELE A1 classes are created fully around this exam format, so every lesson brings you one step closer to it. Here’s the basic picture before we focus on the course.

What the A1 test covers

• Comprensión auditiva (Listening): short messages, dialogues, and announcements (around 25 minutes)
• Comprensión de lectura (Reading): signs, notes, forms, and short texts (around 45 minutes)
• Expresión e interacción escritas (Writing): form-filling and a short personal message (around 25 minutes)
• Expresión e interacción orales (Speaking): a short guided conversation on familiar topics (around 15 minutes)

Exam format at a glance

• Awarding body: the Instituto Cervantes, on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education
• Total score: 100 points
• Two groups: comprehension (reading and listening) and expression (writing and speaking), each for 50
• Passing rule: at least 30 out of 50 in each group, and 60 out of 100 overall
• Validity: lifetime, with no renewal
