TEF & TCF Canada Results: Certificate, Timelines and IRCC Portal

You walked out of the exam. Now you wait, and the waiting is worse than the test, because nobody explains what happens next.

Then the certificate lands in your inbox covered in numbers. Three or four different scales. Two long reference codes. A column heading in French that nobody warned you about. Somewhere in there sit the exact figures Canada’s immigration portal wants, along with several figures it will reject. This step gets far less attention than the exam itself. That is odd, because this is where paperwork slips turn a good score into a refused file. IRCC states plainly that entering the wrong column can lead to refusal. That risk applies whether you’re heading for Express Entry, a provincial nomination, or the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot. All three accept the same two tests.

Here’s what your French test results actually contain and when they arrive. Then we’ll move them into your Express Entry profile without a mistake.

When Do TEF Canada and TCF Canada Results Arrive?

TEF Canada results are sent by email in roughly two weeks from your test date. TCF Canada results in India usually arrive within two to four weeks through your test center. Some centers report faster turnarounds. Certificates for both tests are valid for two years from the exam date.

A few practical notes on that window.

Your certificate arrives by email, so check spam and junk folders before contacting anyone. Le français des affaires flags this as the single most common reason candidates think their result is missing.

TCF candidates in India often see their early reading and listening scores on the screen at the end of the computer-based session. That isn’t your certificate. It’s an indication. The official document, bearing the writing and speaking marks of the assigned human examiner, comes later.

Plan around the slower end, not the faster one. If you’re working toward an Express Entry deadline, assume four weeks and be pleasantly surprised.

What Your TEF Canada Certificate Shows, Line by Line

A TEF Canada certificate carries your score for each of the four abilities on a scale of 0 to 699. Beside those numbers sit two more reference frameworks and one column that exists purely for Canadian immigration.

• Score out of 699. The raw figure for each ability.
• CEFR level. A1 through C2, the European scale is also used on DELF and DALF diplomas.
• CLB or NCLC level. 1 through 12, the Canadian benchmark IRCC works in.
• Équivalence ancien score. Translated as “old score equivalence”. This is the column the IRCC portal requires.

That fourth column is the one to circle in pen. It exists because the TEF scoring scale changed, and IRCC’s systems were built around the earlier scale. Le français des affaires dit clairement. To fill in an IRCC profile, use the scores in the old score equivalence column.

Which TEF Score Column Does the IRCC Portal Require?

Enter the “Équivalence ancien score” values. Do not enter the Score/699 values. IRCC’s own guidance says the /699 numbers aren’t compatible with its online system, and candidates who enter them may face refusal of their application.

This is the highest-stakes paragraph in this article, so it’s worth sitting with.

The mistake is easy to make and hard to spot. The /699 figures are printed in a larger font. They appear first. They look like the real result because, in every other context, they are. You see 462 for listening. You type 462. You move on. The portal accepts it because the portal can’t know your intent. The problem surfaces much later, when it’s expensive.

There’s a second wrinkle for a specific group. Some candidates sat the TEF Canada between 11 December 2023 and 6 May 2024. Those results used a changed reporting method that was later undone. IRCC asks those candidates to update their Express Entry profile with the corrected scoring. If you tested in that window, check your profile rather than assuming it’s fine.

Reading a TCF Canada Certificate With Two Score Scales

TCF Canada does something TEF Canada doesn’t. It reports your four abilities on two separate scales, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion.

• Listening and reading: scored out of 699.
• Writing and speaking: scored out of 20.

So a TCF Canada certificate might show 458 for listening and 10 for writing, and both of those reach NCLC 7. The 10 isn’t a weak result. It’s a band on a 20-point scale, where each point spans a wide range of performance.

Your level is judged one skill at a time. Your weakest skill set is what you can claim when a program needs a floor in all four. Where to Find Your Certificate Number and NIP

The IRCC portal asks for more than scores. It wants two identifiers from the document, and they appear together on the certificate as a single hyphenated string.

• The part before the hyphen is your test form or certificate number.
• The part after the hyphen is your NIP.

Enter them in their separate fields. Applicants routinely paste the entire hyphenated code into a single box, then wonder why validation fails.

Keep the PDF somewhere you’ll still find it in eighteen months. You may need it again at the permanent residence application stage, long after the excitement of the result has faded.

How Long Are TEF and TCF Canada Results Valid?

Two years from the exam date, for both TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Results must be under two years old when you create your Express Entry profile. They must also still be valid when you submit your PR application. Those are two separate tests, not one.

That second condition is where timing gets sharp.

Read it again. Valid at profile creation and valid at PR submission. Those can be many months apart. Say your result is 22 months old when your invitation lands. You then have 60 days to build and send a full file. That’s very little room.

The safe habit is to work backward. Decide roughly when you expect to submit, then make sure your test date leaves a comfortable margin. Testing too early is a real cost, not a head start.

What Happens If Your French Scores Expire Mid-Application?

If your results lapse before you submit, you retake. There’s no extension, no grace period, and no partial retake. Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada require you to retake all four sections.

You also need to respect the 20-day waiting period between attempts for both tests. Five official test centers publish that figure in near-identical wording, including Concordia, McGill, and UQAM. Some sources still quote 30 days, which is outdated.

Twenty days sounds generous until you add seat availability. In India, seats at Alliance Française centers often sell out in minutes. Can You Challenge a TCF Canada Result You Think Is Wrong?

Only on TCF Canada, only for writing and speaking, and only for exams sat before 1 September 2026. France Éducation international is suspending the re-evaluation service for sessions held on or after that date, with resumption planned for autumn 2027. TEF Canada has never offered a re-evaluation.

The reasoning behind the limits is sound. Listening and reading are machine-scored multiple-choice, so there’s no human judgment to appeal. Writing and speaking are graded by examiners, and examiners vary.

Two things people get wrong. A re-evaluation can lower your score, and if it does, only the revised certificate counts. And the fee isn’t refunded in any outcome, including when your score goes up.

Does IRCC Get Your Results Directly From the Test Board?

No. You enter your scores yourself when you complete your Express Entry profile or application. IRCC can then verify those scores with the test organization. That’s why the certificate number and NIP are required fields rather than optional ones.

That design has a consequence worth understanding.

Because you type the numbers in, a typing error is entirely possible, and the system won’t catch it for you. IRCC can also check them against the source. So an error that inflates your level is treated as a misrepresentation risk, not a clerical slip. Those two facts together are why the entry step deserves more care than it usually gets.

There’s no upload step for the certificate at the Express Entry profile stage. You’re asked for it later, at the permanent residence application stage, along with the rest of your supporting documents. So keep the original PDF exactly as it arrived, unedited and unconverted.

A practical habit that costs nothing: before you submit, open the certificate beside the portal screen and read each figure aloud as you check it. Reading aloud catches transposed digits that silent checking misses. It sounds simple because it is, and it has saved several of my students a very expensive correction.

If you sat more than one attempt, make sure you’re working from the certificate you intend to use. Applicants with two results sometimes enter figures from the older, weaker one out of habit, because that PDF sits higher in their inbox. If your weakest section is the reason you’re short, deciding whether to retake TEF Canada is a better question than re-entering old numbers.

Checks to Run the Day Your Certificate Lands

Ten minutes of care here prevents months of trouble later. Work through this list before you file anything.

1. Name. Does it match your passport exactly, including spelling, order, and middle names? A mismatch between the certificate and the passport is a documented cause of delay.
2. Date of birth and passport number. Same check.
3. Test version. Does it say TEF Canada or TCF Canada, not TEF Études, TEF IRN, or TCF tout public? Only the Canadian versions count for Express Entry.
4. All four abilities are present. Immigration needs everyone.
5. Weakest ability. Find it, then read what benchmark it reaches. That number is your real level.
6. The old score equivalence column. Locate it now, before you’re filling out forms at midnight.
7. Expiry date. Write it in your calendar and set a reminder for three months out.

If something is wrong on the certificate, contact your test center straight away rather than the exam board. In India, your Alliance Française center is the channel for corrections.

And if permanent residence isn’t your goal, note that Canada uses a much lower French bar elsewhere. The French test for Canadian citizenship accepts a wider list of certificates, including DELF and DALF, and even expired ones.
