Every year I meet students who’ve picked a Spanish university, checked the visa checklist, seen no language requirement, and relaxed.
Then the university’s admission page asks for a B2 certificate, and there are five months left. Our time to reach DELE B2 explains why that is rarely enough.
That’s the confusion worth clearing up first. The Spanish consulate doesn’t set your language level, as our Spanish nationality rules page sets out. The university does. And for Spanish-taught programs, most public universities have settled on B2 as the working standard.
I’ve spent 15 years teaching Spanish, and the students who make it to Spain comfortably are almost never the fastest learners. They’re the ones who found out the required level early enough to build toward it properly. Two years of steady study is calm. Five months is not.
So here’s what you actually need: the level by degree type, which certificates are accepted, how homologación works for Indian qualifications, what the visa asks for, and how far ahead to start.
What Spanish Level Do You Need to Study in Spain?
Most Spanish public universities require B2 for Spanish-taught bachelor’s degrees when you come from a non-Spanish-speaking education system. Master’s programs usually require B2 as a minimum, with C1 common in language, humanities, and teaching fields. Some degrees set B1, but that’s the exception.
Here’s what named universities actually publish:
| Institution | Program type | Level required |
|---|---|---|
| Universidad Complutense de Madrid | Bachelor’s (grado) | B2 |
| Universidad Carlos III de Madrid | Bachelor’s (grado) | B2 |
| Universidad Carlos III de Madrid | Master’s | B2 |
| Universidad Complutense de Madrid | Master’s and doctorate | C1 strongly recommended |
| Universidad de Zaragoza | Bachelor’s, specific degrees | B1 |
| Universidad de Granada, Máster ELE | Master’s | C1 |
Two patterns stand out.
B2 is the safe target. If you don’t yet know which university you’ll attend, build toward B2. It clears the bar almost everywhere for undergraduate study and meets the minimum for most master’s programs.
Aim higher if your field is language-heavy. Humanities, law, teaching, and translation programs often want C1, and even where B2 is the formal minimum, C1 makes the coursework survivable.
That second point deserves honesty. B2 gets you admitted. It doesn’t automatically make lectures comfortable. Students who arrive at a bare B2 spend their first semester translating in their heads. Those who arrive at a strong B2 or a C1 spend it studying.
Barcelona adds a wrinkle worth knowing. Teaching there can involve switching between Spanish and Catalan, so a comfortable level of Spanish matters more, not less.

Is the DELE Accepted, or Do You Need Something Else?
Yes, the DELE is accepted directly. Major Spanish universities name the DELE and SIELE explicitly among the certificates they accept without further verification. Other certificates usually have to be validated through UNEDasiss before a university will count them.
The Universidad Complutense, for example, accepts the DELE, SIELE, the Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas, and Madrid’s public university language centers directly, and routes everything else through UNEDasiss.
Both are also recognized far beyond admissions, which matters if you later apply for residency or nationality. So which should you take?
Choose the DELE if you want a diploma with indefinite validity that you’ll still be using in ten years, for a job or a nationality file, as well as for admission.
Choose SIELE if you need a fast, flexible result. It’s computer-based; you pick your own date; results arrive in about three weeks; and it certifies A1 to C1 on a 0-1000 scale. The catch is that the SIELE certificate is valid for five years, whereas the DELE never expires.
For most Indian students, I advise the DELE for a simple reason. Your degree is four or five years long. Your career afterward lasts for decades. A certificate that expires halfway through is a bill you’ll pay again. We set them side by side in our DELE SIELE comparison, and the wider field is covered in our Spanish proficiency tests.
One planning note. DELE results take about two months, and closer to three for the busy May and November sessions. Count that into your admission timeline, not out of it.
Does the Spain Student Visa Require Spanish?
No. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi’s checklist for study visas over 90 days does not list a language certificate. The language requirement is set by the university at the time of admission, not by the consulate. Your visa file requires your admission letter, which depends on your Spanish level.
The embassy’s published study visa checklist requires the application form, photographs, the fee, your passport, the admission letter with study plan and proof of fee payment, proof of accommodation, notarized prior qualifications, financial evidence, police clearance, a medical certificate for longer stays, and health insurance without co-payment.
No DELE. No SIELE. Nothing about language.
Which is exactly why students get caught. The visa list looks like the requirements list, but it isn’t. The order is: reach the level, get the certificate, get admitted, then apply for the visa.
Homologación: The Paperwork Indian Students Cannot Skip
Indian qualifications don’t automatically count in Spain. Secondary qualifications need to be homologated to the Spanish título de Bachiller, a process handled by the Ministry of Education. University degrees are reviewed by the Ministry of Science’s recognition office, which has a legal maximum of 6 months to issue a decision.
This is the second timeline running alongside your language preparation, and it’s the one students discover late.
For undergraduate admission, your Class 12 qualification will be recognized as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato. Upon filing, you receive a volante de inscripción condicional, which allows you to continue the admission process while the file is pending. UNEDasiss then issues the accreditation universities read, showing your access mark and Bachillerato modality. UNEDasiss also runs the optional PCE exams, which can raise your admission mark for competitive degrees.
For postgraduate admission, degrees go to the Ministry of Science’s national recognition office. Under Royal Decree 889/2022, the decision must be issued within six months. Homologación applies to regulated professions; declaración de equivalencia applies to everything else.
Documents that aren’t in Spanish need an apostille and a sworn translation. Start collecting them early, because Indian document processing has its own lines.
The practical takeaway: run your language preparation and your paperwork in parallel from the start. Students who finish their B2 and then begin homologation lose an intake.
Scholarships: What Indian Students Can Actually Apply For
Scholarship advice for Spain is unusually noisy, and a lot of it repeats programs Indians aren’t eligible for. Here’s the honest picture.
Fundación Carolina, the one most often recommended, is restricted to nationals of Latin American countries in the Ibero-American Community. Indian students aren’t eligible.
MAEC-AECID is more nuanced. Its Escuela Diplomática program is open to nationals of Latin America, Africa, and Asia, so India qualifies in principle, but it’s restricted to civil servants and public-sector personnel. The 2026-2027 call offers a monthly stipend plus health insurance. The master’s programs under MAEC-AECID are limited to either Latin America and the Philippines or Africa and the Middle East, so India isn’t eligible for them.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are a realistic, broad route. They’re open to students worldwide, cover participation costs, travel, and a living allowance, and you apply directly to each consortium, typically between October and January. Language requirements are set by each consortium, and Spanish-taught tracks commonly want B2.
University-level aid exists, but it varies by program. Check the specific university rather than trusting aggregator sites.
Notice what almost all of these share: applications in Spanish or a Spanish-taught program behind them. The certificate isn’t just an admission tick; it’s what makes you a credible applicant.
How Far Ahead Should You Start?
Start at least two years before you intend to enroll if you’re beginning from zero. Reaching a genuine B2 takes most learners well over a year of consistent study, and then you need two to three months for DELE results, plus a separate homologation timeline of up to six months.
Work the arithmetic backward from an intake date, and it becomes obvious.
- Intake: September.
- Admission decisions and document deadlines are usually in the spring.
- Certificate in hand by then, which means taking the DELE the previous autumn at the latest.
- Results: two to three months after that exam.
- Reaching B2: the long stretch before all of it.
Students who start eight months out end up choosing between a rushed exam attempt and a deferred intake. Neither is good.
If you’re building from scratch, our online Spanish course takes you there, and the ladder runs through a beginner Spanish course into the DELE B1 classes and then the DELE B2 course levels. We map the realistic month-by-month path in class.
Not Going to Spain? The Same Certificate Still Pays
Worth saying, because plenty of learners start this journey and change their plans.
A DELE B2 isn’t only an admission document. It’s the level Indian employers ask for in Spanish-language roles across IT support, BPO and KPO operations, export and trade, travel, and client-facing work with Latin American accounts. That’s a completely different return on the same study.
So even if Spain doesn’t happen, the certificate doesn’t become useless. It moves from your application file to your CV. We break the job market down by level and role in our guide to Spanish job roles.
That’s a reasonable way to think about the risk. You’re building an asset with two separate uses.
What to Do Next
Three things to carry away:
- B2 is the working standard for Spanish-taught degrees, and C1 is worth targeting for language-heavy fields.
- Your visa doesn’t require Spanish. Your university does, so read the university’s admission page, not the consulate’s checklist.
- Homologation and DELE results each take months, so run them in parallel and start at least two years out.
If Spain is the plan, the useful first step is to find out where your Spanish actually stands today and how far you really are from B2.
