The gap between sitting the DELF and receiving the diploma is longer than most candidates expect, and almost no one warns them in advance.
You walk out of the speaking exam, and then nothing happens for six weeks. Then a result appears. Then a different document arrives months later. Meanwhile, a university deadline is approaching, and you’re not sure which piece of paper to upload. For over 15 years, I’ve fielded this set of questions after every single session. Here’s the whole sequence, from result day to the replacement diploma, including the parts nobody clearly publishes. When Are DELF Results Published in India?
DELF and DALF results are generally published six to eight weeks after the written exam. Alliance Française centers release them through their portal or by email, and each session has its own publication date announced in advance alongside the exam calendar.
So a June exam produces results in late July or early August. A December exam produces results in mid-to-late January.
That timeline exists because of how the papers are marked. Listening and reading are objectively scored, but writing and speaking are graded by trained examiners against detailed criteria and then moderated. Multiply that across every candidate at 15 centers and six weeks stops looking slow.
Two practical implications.
If you’re applying to a university or for a visa, count backward. A September exam gives you results in late October, which is comfortable for most intakes. A December exam gives you results in January, which is tight for anything starting in the same academic year.
And if you’re planning a retake, the results date determines whether you can register for the very next session. Sometimes the result lands after the next window has already closed.
What Is the Attestation de Réussite and Is It Valid?
This is the single most useful thing to know in this whole article.
Candidates routinely panic because a Campus France deadline or a job application falls in the three-month gap before the diploma arrives. It doesn’t matter. The attestation carries the same information, comes from the same authority, and is accepted in the same places.
What it contains:
- Your name is registered
- The level awarded, such as DELF B2
- Your score in each of the four papers, out of 25
- Your total out of 100
- The session and center
Download it, save several copies, and keep a PDF somewhere you’ll still have access to years from now. People change laptops and lose email accounts; the attestation should outlive both.

None of this changes at C1 and C2. DALF results follow the same publication window, produce the same attestation, and arrive as the same lifetime diploma.
When Does the Printed DELF Diploma Arrive?
The printed diploma is usually issued three to four months after the exam. Your Alliance Française center notifies you when it’s ready for collection, and you generally need to collect it in person or authorize someone in writing to collect it on your behalf.
So, a June exam results in a diploma around September or October. A December exam produces one around March or April.
A few things worth knowing about collection:
- Most centers require a photo ID matching your registration
- You can usually authorize a family member with a written letter plus copies of both IDs
- Some centers hold uncollected diplomas indefinitely; others have storage policies
- Diplomas are printed centrally, so a delay at that stage affects everyone in the session
If you’ve moved to a new city or country since the exam, contact your center before traveling. Some will courier, some won’t, and policies differ between centers.
The diploma itself is valid for life. Unlike TEF and TCF results, which expire two years after the test date, a DELF or DALF diploma never needs renewal. That permanence is precisely why it’s worth the wait, and why it suits slow-moving files like university applications and residency procedures. Can DELF Results Be Re-Evaluated or Challenged?
No. Once DELF results are published, they’re final. France Éducation international does not offer re-evaluation, re-marking, or appeal of a DELF or DALF paper. Your only route after a fail is to retake the full four-skill exam at a later session.
This surprises candidates who’ve come from Indian university systems where revaluation is routine. It’s worth understanding why the position is so firm.
Writing and speaking papers are marked against published criteria by trained, certified examiners, and the process already includes internal moderation before results are released. The system treats that moderation as the review stage, so there’s no second review afterward.
There’s a second consequence people miss. You cannot retake a single section. If you scored 4 out of 25 in speaking and 22 in everything else, the whole diploma is refused and the whole exam has to be sat again, all four papers, full fee.
That rule is exactly why balanced preparation matters more than peak performance in your strongest skill. It also means a failed attempt should trigger a diagnosis, not just a rebooking.
How Do You Use Your DELF Result for University, Visa, or Work?
Use the attestation de réussite immediately and the diploma when it arrives. Campus France dossiers, French university applications, prefecture files, and employer verifications all accept the attestation. Keep digital copies of both documents permanently.
For each use case:
Campus France and French universities. The attestation is accepted as part of the Études en France dossier. Upload a clear scan showing your section scores and total. Most French-taught programs look for B2, though some accept B1 with a preparatory year. French residence and nationality files. Prefectures generally want to see the diploma, and often the original. Since the language requirement is now A2 for a multi-year card, B1 for the 10-year card, and B2 for naturalization, the level printed on that document does real work.
Employers in India and abroad. Recruiters hiring for French-speaking roles usually accept either document, and many just want the level and the section scores. Adding “DELF B2, France Éducation international” to a CV is more credible than “fluent in French” because it’s verifiable, and the official diploma authority can confirm awards.
One habit worth building. Store your attestation, diploma scan, convocation, and payment receipt in a single folder that syncs to cloud storage. Ten years from now, when a prefecture asks for the original of something you sat in 2026, you’ll be glad.

What Happens If You Lose Your DELF Diploma?
France Éducation international does not reissue DELF diplomas. If the original is lost or damaged, you can instead request an official attestation confirming the award, usually through the center where you sat the exam. The attestation carries the same legal weight for verification.
This trips people up because they assume they can request a duplicate diploma. It isn’t. The diploma is printed once.
What you can obtain is documentary confirmation that the diploma was awarded, which serves the purpose in almost every real situation: an employer verifying a claim, a university checking a dossier, a prefecture confirming a level.
Two protective habits:
- Scan the diploma the day you collect it. Front and back, high resolution, stored in the cloud.
- Keep your original attestation. It’s not a legal substitute for the diploma, but it’s independent proof of your session, level, and scores.
If you’re planning to send an original abroad, send a certified copy where the recipient allows it and keep the original at home.
What Should You Do If Your DELF Result Is a Fail?
Read the four section scores before doing anything else. A fail caused by one paper below 5 out of 25 is a different problem from a total under 50 across the board, and the two need completely different preparation.
Three patterns show up in the results I review with students.
One paper is below 5; everything else is strong. This is a skill gap, not a level gap. Almost always speaking or listening. You don’t need to redo the level. You need six to eight weeks of concentrated work on one skill.
Total between 40 and 49, no paper below 5. You’re close, and you’re at the right level. This usually resolves with timed practice and better exam technique rather than new grammar.
Total below 40. The level was too ambitious. Sitting the same exam again without dropping back a level tends to repeat the result.
Whichever pattern you’re in, remember you must retake all four papers and pay the full fee again, so a rushed rebooking rarely pays.
