Here is the number that changes how you should prepare for DELF B2 speaking: the debate is ten to thirteen minutes long. Your prepared presentation is five to seven.
Most candidates spend three weeks polishing an exposé and no time preparing to be contradicted. They deliver a clean seven-minute argument, then relax. The next thirteen minutes are pure improvisation against an examiner whose job is to disagree. That is where B2 orals are won and lost.
This sample paper treats the debate as the main event. You get a trigger article in exam format. You get a model exposé built on a structure that survives interruption. And you get a real exchange that shows how to handle counterarguments without losing your position.
B2 is the highest DELF level, and the jump from B1 is real. How long DELF B2 takes gives a month-by-month picture of the work involved.
How Is the DELF B2 Speaking Exam Structured?
Two parts in about twenty minutes: a five-to-seven-minute presentation defending a point of view, then a ten-to-thirteen-minute debate with the examiner. You draw two documents, choose one, and get 30 minutes to prepare.
Thirty minutes is a lot next to the ten you got at B1. There is a reason for it. The documents are longer, usually 150 to 200 words of opinion journalism. And you have to find a problem in them, not just a topic.
The rest of the exam is the longest of any DELF level. Listening runs for 30 minutes. Reading takes an hour; writing takes another hour. The collective papers total 2.5 hours. The pass mark is 50 out of 100, with the usual floor of 5 out of 25 in each paper. Official downloadable subjects are published on the France Éducation International B2 sample subjects page.
How Are the 25 Marks Split Under the Current Grid?
Task completion is worth 10 marks: five for the exposé and five for the debate. Language carries 15: five each for vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. That is 60 percent of your oral score riding on the quality of your French rather than the strength of your argument.
Many preparation sites still publish something else. Older grids split the exposé into three sub-criteria worth 7 marks and the debate into two worth 6, leaving 12 for language. The current grids are simpler, and they weigh language more heavily:
| Criterion | Below B2 | At B2 | At B2+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task 1: monologue suivi (5 to 7 min) | 1 | 3 | 5 |
| Task 2: exercice en interaction, débat (10 to 13 min) | 1 | 3 | 5 |
| Vocabulary | 1 | 3 | 5 |
| Grammar | 1 | 3 | 5 |
| Pronunciation | 1 | 3 | 5 |
You can check the descriptors yourself in the published B2 oral production grid.
Read the B2 and B2+ descriptors side by side, and a pattern appears. At B2, you use a wide range of vocabulary, with occasional slips that can blur the meaning. At B2+, you cover gaps with synonyms and paraphrasing, and slips never get in the way.
The difference is recovery, not perfection. Candidates who repair themselves smoothly score higher than those who freeze when a word is missing.

The Sample Paper
Sample trigger document (original practice material in exam format)
Introduction.
Conclusion.
How to build an exposé that survives the debate
Frame a problem, not a topic. Weak candidates open with “Ce document parle des téléphones portables au travail.” Strong candidates open with a question that has two defensible answers. The B2+ descriptor asks you to “dégager la problématique.” That word means tension, not subject.
Argue in three moves, and make the third one a concession. The model above gives ground before it concludes. That is not weakness. It removes the examiner’s best objection and shows the nuance the debate criterion rewards.
Attack the evidence, not only the conclusion. Questioning the twelve percent figure is the move that separates B2 from B1. You are not denying that productivity rose. You are asking what else could explain it.
Use your thirty minutes in three blocks. Ten minutes to read and annotate. Fifteen to build arguments and hunt for examples. Five to guess the counter-arguments and draft your replies. Candidates skip that last block, which pays the most.
The hardest thing to teach at B2 is not argument, but composure. Candidates who have only rehearsed alone treat the first counter-argument as a sign that they have failed. In our B2 batches, the teacher has disagreed with you since week one. Being contradicted stops feeling like a verdict. It starts feeling like the conversation it is.
Sample Debate: How the Examiner Pushes Back
The debate runs ten to thirteen minutes. The examiner takes the opposing side regardless of what you argued and probes for weak points.
Phrases that keep you in control
Concede before you counter.
Reframe when the question is loaded.
Buy thinking time without silence.
Nuance rather than reverse.
Never repeat your exposé louder. The debate descriptor rewards new ideas and convincing replies, even to arguments outside the document. Repetition reads as having nothing left.
B2 is the top of the DELF range, but not the top of the ladder. DALF C1 and C2 show what advanced certification entails once you’re past this level.
Argument structure carries across every B2 paper, which is why candidates rarely prepare the oral in isolation. The DELF B2 writing papers use the same concession-and-counter architecture in written form, and the DELF B2 reading papers train you to spot it in someone else’s writing.
Which Topics Appear in B2 Trigger Documents?
B2 documents come from opinion journalism on social debates: work and technology, environment and consumption, education, media and information, health, urban life, and equality. They almost always present a measure or a trend that divides people.
Ten that recur across sessions:
For each one, prepare a question rather than a list of pros and cons. “Faut-il limiter la publicité destinée aux enfants ?” gives you somewhere to go. “La publicité” does not.
Audio feeds this bank fastest. B2 listening documents come from the same register as French radio and interviews. DELF B2 listening papers target that overlap.
What Separates a Pass From a Strong B2 Score?
The pass comes from a clear position with organized arguments. The strong score comes from handling contradiction. You concede precisely. You separate claims. You repair your own French without stopping.
Four habits show up in every high-scoring oral I have marked:
- They distinguish. “Il faut séparer deux questions ici” is worth more than any list of arguments. It shows the analytical control B2 is built around.
- They self-correct fluidly. The B2+ descriptor credits this directly. Silence while you hunt for a word costs more than a wrong word repaired.
- They vary their register deliberately. Formal argument in the exposé, slightly more conversational in the debate. Examiners hear the flexibility.
- They stay engaged with the examiner. Eye contact, listening cues, responding to the actual question asked rather than the one they prepared. The interaction criterion is about interaction.
In fifteen years of running mock orals, one mistake sinks strong candidates more than any other. They treat the debate as an interrogation to survive instead of a conversation to have. The tone you bring changes the score.

Why B2 Speaking Now Carries More Weight for France
Since 1 January 2026, French naturalization applications require B2 rather than B1, and the level must be reached in all four skills. A candidate with B2 in listening, reading, and writing but B1 in speaking does not meet the condition.
The requirement comes from Law 2024-42 of 26 January 2024, applied by Decree 2025-648 of 15 July 2025. Long-term residence cards moved up too, from A2 to B1.
For many applicants, the oral is now the bottleneck. Speaking is usually the last skill to reach a level. A strong written profile no longer carries you, because the oral has to stand on its own.
One distinction still catches learners in India out. Canadian immigration points are based on TEF Canada or TCF Canada, not DELF, and those results expire after two years.
DELF diplomas never expire. That makes B2 a lasting credential, whether you need it for study applications, for French employers in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Pune, or for French residency.
Candidates on either pathway usually take a DELF B2 course. Thirteen minutes of live argument is not something you can rehearse alone.
What Candidates Ask About the DELF B2 Oral Exam
Book a Mock Débat Before You Book Your Exam
You can prepare an exposé alone. You cannot prepare for a debate alone, because the whole skill is responding to arguments you did not write.
Our DELF coaching program runs timed mock orals. A teacher argues the opposite side for the full thirteen minutes, then scores you criterion by criterion against the grid above. Batches stay at six to ten students, at the Noida center or online. If you are outside Delhi NCR, online French batches with the same teachers and the same mocks are available.
