DELF B1 speaking sample papers

At B1, the DELF oral stops being about you and starts being about your opinions. That is the shift nobody warns candidates about.

A1 and A2 asked you to describe your life. B1 hands you a short newspaper extract on a social topic. You get ten minutes. Then you have to name the issue, take a side, back it with examples, and hold your ground while the examiner pushes back. In French. For five to seven minutes.

It is a different exam. It is also the level most learners in India need, because B1 is where French becomes useful at work and in study applications.

The sample paper below runs all three tasks in exam order. The third task comes first in the explanation, because that is where most marks are lost. Before you book, it is worth checking which exam your goal requires. TEF and TCF Canada cover the immigration and study pathways side-by-side.

What Is the Structure of the DELF B1 Speaking Exam?

Three tasks in fifteen minutes or less. A guided interview of two to three minutes, a role-play of three to four minutes, and a five- to seven-minute talk on a document you are given. Only the third task gets preparation time.

TaskWhat you doTimePrepared?
1Entretien dirigé, questions about you2 to 3 minNo
2Exercice en interaction, à role play3 to 4 minNo
3Expression d’un point de vue from a document5 to 7 minYes, 10 min

That “no preparation” on task two matters. Candidates assume the ten minutes cover everything. They walk in with notes for the presentation only. Then the examiner opens a negotiation scenario cold.

The written papers around it are longer, too. Listening runs about 25 minutes, with audio up to six minutes; reading takes 45 minutes, and writing takes 45 minutes. Collective papers total one hour and fifty-five minutes. The pass mark is 50 out of 100, with a floor of 5 out of 25 per paper. The official specification and downloadable past papers are available on the France Éducation International B1 sample subjects page.

How Do Examiners Distribute the 25 Marks at B1?

Each task carries up to 4 marks for a total of 12, and language carries 13: vocabulary 5, grammar 4, pronunciation 4. Two examiners mark independently, and double marking is compulsory.

The band values are 0 for no usable production, 1 for below B1, 2.5 for B1, and 4 for B1+. Vocabulary again runs 0, 1, 3, and 5.

What moves you from 2.5 to 4 on the point de vue task? The descriptors say it plainly. At 2.5, you present the theme in simple terms and justify your opinion with simple reasons, and the examiner may still prompt you. At 4, you present the problem, develop an argument that holds together, and supply varied reasons and examples so you are understood without effort. The phrase “doing the work” varies. One reason repeated three ways scores the lower band.

You can read the full published descriptors in the official B1 oral production grid, and it is worth reading once before your first mock.

This page gives you the paper itself. For the connector sets, argument frames, and syllabus behind these models, see the DELF B1 speaking guide.

DELF B1 speaking practice sample questions answers

Sample Paper Task 3: Expression of a Point of View

You draw two documents and choose one. Each is a short, press-style text of roughly 80 to 120 words on a topic of general interest. You get ten minutes to prepare, then five to seven minutes to present and discuss.

Sample trigger document (written in exam format for practice)

How to approach the point de vue

Spend your first two minutes on the document, not on your opinion. Underline the topic sentence, the two sides, and the closing question. Everything you need is in those three places.

Use a four-move structure, and it will never collapse:

  1. Present the document. One or two sentences. “Ce document parle de… La question posée est…”
  2. State your position clearly. One sentence. Do not hedge, because the grid rewards a defended point of view.
  3. Give two or three arguments with a concrete example for each. Personal experience counts and is easier than invented statistics.
  4. Acknowledge the other side, then conclude. “Cependant…” followed by “C’est pourquoi…” is the single most useful pair of connectors at B1.

Write keywords, not sentences. Your prep sheet should look like: télétravail / avantages: temps, calme / problème: jeunes, liens / mon avis: solution mixte / exemple: premier emploi. Six lines are plenty, and they keep your delivery natural.

Do not fear the personal example. Examiners at B1 explicitly want concrete illustrations, and your own life is the richest source you have. A story about your commute in Noida beats a vague line about “les gens en général.”

The follow-up questions

After your presentation, the examiner asks three to five questions. They are not a trap; they are part of the task’s interaction. Expect things like:

Answer in two or three sentences, not one. And if you disagree with the examiner, say so politely. Defending your position is exactly what the descriptor asks for.

After marking several thousand mock orals at this level, the single clearest predictor of a strong B1 score is not vocabulary range. It is whether a candidate can be contradicted without losing their thread. That is a teachable skill, and it is the reason our B1 batches stay at six to ten students, so every learner gets argued with in every session rather than watching someone else do it.

Sample Paper Task 2: The Interaction Role Play

Three to four minutes, no preparation. You draw a card describing a situation with a problem to solve, and you have to negotiate, complain, persuade, or explain your way through it.

Sample card

How to approach the interaction

The examiner will resist. That is the design. A candidate who gets an immediate yes has not demonstrated anything, so examiners are trained to push back at least once.

Three moves get you through almost any B1 card:

  1. Soften the opening. “Excusez-moi de vous déranger” and “Est-ce que je peux vous parler ?” buy you goodwill and score on the sociolinguistic side.
  2. Explain the consequence, not just the fact. Not “vous faites du bruit” but “je n’arrive plus à dormir et je travaille tôt.” Consequences make requests reasonable.
  3. Offer something back. The strongest B1 candidates always concede a point. “Le week-end, ça ne me dérange pas.” That single sentence turns a complaint into a negotiation, which is what the task is testing.

Keep the register formal. Vous throughout, conditional forms that you can manage: je voudrais, il serait possible, pourriez-vous. The descriptors specifically mention register confusion as a below-level marker.

Sample Paper Task 1: The Guided Interview

Two to three minutes, no preparation. Longer than at A2 and noticeably deeper. The examiner will not stop at facts.

Sample questions

The last two are where B1 candidates separate. Questions about the future and about hypotheticals invite the futur simple and the conditionnel présent. Use each one correctly at least once, and you signal control well above the minimum band.

Prepare a ninety-second self-presentation you can deliver without thinking, then let the examiner steer. Rehearsed answers to every possible question sound stiff. A rehearsed opening followed by genuine conversation sounds like B1.

B1 is also where French starts appearing on a CV rather than in a study plan. French careers in India cover the roles that open at this level and above.

Because the opinion structures overlap almost completely, most candidates prepare the productive papers together. The DELF B1 writing papers use the same argument frames on paper, and the DELF B1 reading papers draw their articles from the same topic pool.

Which Topics Come Up Most in B1 Trigger Documents?

B1 documents stay on everyday social questions rather than politics or specialized subjects. Work and technology, environment, health, education, transport, media, and consumer habits cover the large majority.

Build an opinion bank around these ten:

  9. Le téléphone portable à l’école
  10. Le bénévolat et la vie associative

For each, prepare two arguments for, two against, and one personal example. That is fifty short blocks of material, and it covers almost anything a B1 document can throw at you.

Building this bank works best alongside audio. DELF B1 listening papers use the same topic families. Words you meet in the listening paper come straight back out in your talk.

Why B1 Speaking Matters More Than It Used To

France raised its language requirements for residence and nationality in January 2026. Long-term residence cards now require B1 rather than A2, and naturalization requires B2 rather than B1, with the level needed in all four skills.

The change comes from Law 2024-42 of 26 January 2024. Decree 2025-648 of 15 July 2025 applied it. It affects any application filed on or after 1 January 2026.

For candidates in India, the reading is simple. If you plan to settle in France, B1 is now a floor, not a target. Treat it as a step on the way to B2.

If your plan is to study or work in French, B1 is still the level where the language starts paying off. Interviews change. Client calls change.

If Canada is the goal, note that DELF is not the exam used for immigration points. TEF Canada and TCF Canada handle that, and their results expire after two years, while DELF diplomas never do.

Candidates who need B1 fast usually take a DELF B1 course. The point de vue task rewards structured practice far more than extra vocabulary.

Practice the Point de Vue Against a Real Examiner

The point de vue task is the one you cannot fix alone. You need someone to hand you an unseen document. To time your ten minutes. To argue back the way an examiner does.

Our DELF online coaching does exactly that. Groups stay at six to ten, so every student presents in every session. You get feedback on each criterion, not a general comment. Sessions run at the Noida center. You can also learn French online with a teacher anywhere in India, on the same schedule.
