Most learners use sample papers incorrectly, which costs them marks.
They do a paper, check the answers, feel encouraged or discouraged, and move on. That’s testing, not practicing. It shows your current score, which our DELE score checker will convert to a pass or fail, and teaches you almost nothing.
Sample papers become valuable when you use them for diagnosis: to find the specific task type you keep losing marks on, then to fix that one thing. The DELE exam pattern from A1 to B2 tells you what each task is testing.
I’ve watched learners work through a dozen past papers with no improvement, and others improve sharply after three, because they treated each paper as data rather than as a scoreboard.
So this page does two jobs. It indexes every DELE sample paper we’ve published by level and skill, so you can find the exact practice you need. And it explains the method that turns practice papers into actual gains.
Where Can You Find Official DELE Sample Papers?
The Instituto Cervantes publishes free official material for every DELE level. For each one, you get an exam guide, a model paper (modelo 0) with MP3 audio and transcriptions, the exam specifications, and a model answer sheet. Past administered papers are also published, complete with answer keys.

Four document types, and each has a different use:
- The exam guide (guía del examen). Read this first, once, for your level. It tells you the task types, timings, word counts, and marking criteria. Most candidates never read it, which is why so many lose marks on word count alone.
- Model 0 (modelo 0). A complete practice exam with audio and transcriptions. Use it as a timed mock, not as an exercise book.
- Specifications (especificaciones). The technical document behind the exam. Useful for teachers and for candidates who want to understand what’s being measured.
- Model answer sheets. Genuinely important and almost universally ignored. Practice on one at least twice before exam day.
That last point deserves emphasis. Reading and listening are automatically scored, so an answer marked in the question booklet earns nothing, and two marks on one item lose the question. Getting comfortable with the answer sheet is worth free marks.

How Should You Actually Use a Sample Paper?
Use each paper in three passes. First, take it cold under exam timing and mark it honestly. Second, go back through every wrong answer and name why it was wrong. Third, do targeted practice on the single task type that produced the most errors. Repeating whole papers without that middle step wastes them.
Let me expand on the middle step, because that’s where the value is.
“Why was it wrong?” has a limited set of answers, and each one has a different fix:
- I didn’t know the word. Vocabulary gap. Note it, learn it, move on.
- I ran out of time. Pacing problem, not a language problem. Practice with a per-task clock.
- I understood the text but chose the wrong option. The most important category. This is inference, and it’s the classic B2 reading failure. More vocabulary won’t help. Practice with explanations will.
- I misread the instruction. Task familiarity. Read the exam guide.
- The audio went too fast. Ear training. Shorter, more frequent listening sessions.
Sort your errors into those five buckets after each paper, and the pattern usually appears within two papers. Most candidates have one dominant bucket, and fixing it moves the score more than anything else they could do.
Papers You Cannot Mark Yourself
Here’s the honest limitation of self-study with sample papers.
Reading and listening, you can mark accurately. The answers are objective, the keys are published, and your score is your score.
Writing and speaking, you cannot. Not because you lack effort, but because the marking criteria are things you can’t see in your own work. Whether your register suits the reader. Whether your paragraphs connect or just sit next to each other. Whether your connectors repeat. Whether your monologue sounds rehearsed.
Every one of those is invisible from the inside, and all of them carry marks.
This is why the group that most often fails is listening plus speaking, and why the papers that most often move on a score review are the human-marked ones. We cover that in our DELE results and retake.
The practical answer is straightforward. Use official sample papers as the backbone of your reading and listening work. Get your writing and speaking corrected by someone who knows the criteria. That’s the specific gap our DELE exam program fills, in batches of 6 to 10 students, in person or through online Spanish lessons, with regular speaking practice and regular individual feedback on written tasks. Mock papers step up sharply at the DELE B2 class level.
Building a Mock Exam Schedule
By the last two months, sample papers should stop being exercises and start being rehearsals.
Here’s the schedule I use with learners:
Eight weeks out. One full-time mock, all four papers, in a single sitting. This gives you a real baseline and shows you how tired you get. Mark it hard.
Six to three weeks out. Skill-focused practice, weighted toward whatever the baseline exposed. Individual papers rather than full sets, but always timed.
Two weeks out. A second full mock, single sitting, including the oral. Compare with the baseline.
Final week. One light paper for familiarity. No new material, no new grammar.
Two rules that make the difference.
Single sittings matter. Doing the reading paper on Tuesday and the listening on Thursday tests your Spanish. Doing all four in one morning tests what the exam actually tests: stamina. At B2, that session runs for close to three hours.
Practice the oral in the same state. If your speaking test falls on the same day as your written papers, rehearse it at least once. Fresh speaking and tired speaking are different performances.

Sample Papers for the Escolar Exams
Young learners have their own official material, and it’s worth using the right set.
The Instituto Cervantes publishes exam guides, model papers, answer sheets, and specifications for the A1, A2/B1, and B2/C1 Escolar exams. Past papers exist for the older levels, and for the new B2/C1 exam, they will be available only after its first sittings.
Using general DELE papers to prepare a 13-year-old is a common mistake. The difficulty standard is the same, but the topics aren’t, and a student who has only practiced with adult content will find the real Escolar paper unfamiliar, which can undermine confidence. What to Do Next
Three things to carry away:
- Official DELE practice material is free and includes exam guides, model papers with audio, specifications, and answer sheets.
- Sitting papers isn’t the point. Sorting your errors into causes and fixing the dominant one is what moves your score.
- You can self-mark reading and listening honestly. You can’t self-mark writing and speaking, which is where most candidates lose the exam.
