Search for “DELE B2 exam format and pattern,” and you get the exam page for one paper, or a blog that lists levels without a single timing. What almost nobody publishes is the whole pattern in one place, level by level, so you can see what actually changes as you climb.

What Is the DELE Exam Pattern for Each Level?
Every DELE level from A1 to B2 tests four papers: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Each is worth 25 points. What changes as you climb is the duration, the number of tasks, the number of items, and how much you have to produce.

Two notes on that table. Every audio text plays twice, at every level, so a missed detail on the first listen is recoverable. And the testing time is the sum of the four papers, because the Instituto Cervantes does not publish a single total figure. Oral preparation time is additional.
What Word Count Does Each Writing Task Require?
Word counts are fixed ranges, not suggestions. A1 asks for 15 to 25 words, then 30 to 40. A2 asks for 60 to 70, then 70 to 80. B1 asks for 100 to 120, then 130 to 150. B2 asks for 150-180 in both tasks.

This is the cheapest mark on the whole exam, and candidates lose it every session. Going well over or under the printed range is penalized, and it has nothing to do with how good your Spanish is.
At A2, B1, and B2, Task 2 offers two options, and you choose one. Practice writing to length, with a visible word count, until it becomes automatic.
What Changes Between the Levels?
Read the table across, and four shifts matter more than the rest.
B2 reading is denser, not longer. B1 gives you 5 tasks and 30 items to complete in 70 minutes. B2 gives you four tasks and 36 items in the same 70 minutes, including a 14-item cloze passage. Pacing, not vocabulary, is what breaks people at B2.
B2 writing includes an audio. Task 1 at B2 gives you a recorded text to listen to and take notes on, then asks you to summarize it and give an opinion in writing. No lower level does this. It is the single most surprising feature of the B2 exam, and self-preparing candidates routinely meet it for the first time on exam day.
Oral preparation stops covering everything. At A1 and A2, your preparation time covers all three tasks. At B1 and B2, it covers only tasks 1 and 2. The photograph task at B1 and the informal conversation at B2 are unprepared, and you meet the stimulus cold in the room.
The domains widen. A1 works only in the personal and public domains. A2 adds education. B1 and B2 add professionalism. That is why B2 texts read like workplace and public-affairs material rather than daily life.

How Is Each Level Scored?
Each of the four papers is worth 25 points, for a total of 100. Reading and writing form Group 1, out of 50. Listening and speaking form Group 2, out of 50. You need at least 30 in each group. The groups do not compensate for each other, and the result is reported as Apto or No Apto.
The cut score is fixed at 60% of the maximum at every level. It is not decided session by session, nor is it curved against other candidates, so nobody is competing with you.
Exam difficulty is kept comparable across sessions using expert validation and statistical scaling, with anchor items in the reading and listening papers. That is why a B2 paper in May and a B2 paper in November are worth the same thing, even though the questions differ.

Which Spanish Varieties Appear at Each Level?
A1 and A2 use only contemporary peninsular varieties. From B1 upward the exam guides specify different varieties of Spanish, and at C1 and C2 a minimum of three geographic varieties per paper.
That progression matters for training your ear. A learner who has practiced only on Spanish-accented audio manages A1 and A2 comfortably, then meets Latin American voices at B1 and loses marks to unfamiliarity rather than ability.
On its own, the rule is generous. Every exam guide states that any Hispanic linguistic norm consistently used by large groups of educated speakers is valid. So, “ustedes” instead of “vosotros” is fine throughout, as long as you do not mix the two in one text.
Where the Exam Content Comes From
There is no separate DELE syllabus document, which is why searching for one yields no official results.
The exam draws its content from the Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes, a three-volume specification covering all six CEFR levels. The Instituto Cervantes states in its own technical paper on DELE production that the linguistic content assessed is as specified by the Plan Curricular, particularly its grammatical, notional, functional, and pragmatic-discursive components.
It is free to consult online, and each level has twelve inventories: grammar, pronunciation, spelling, functions, pragmatic strategies, text genres, general notions, specific notions, cultural references, sociocultural knowledge, intercultural skills, and learning procedures.
Grammar is one of the twelve. That single fact explains more about DELE results than anything else on this page. Candidates who prepare by studying grammar are covering roughly one-twelfth of what the specification describes, while functions, text genres, register, and coherence all carry marks in the writing and speaking papers.
A concrete example. A B1 candidate writes a grammatically flawless reply to a friend’s email, opening with Estimado señor and closing with Atentamente. Perfect grammar, wrong register, and it costs marks. More grammar never fixes that.
Using This Page to Plan
Three practical uses, depending on where you are.
Choosing a level. Compare the output demands. If writing 300 to 360 words in 80 minutes sounds impossible today, B2 is not your next exam.
Building a study plan. Weight your practice by what each paper actually demands. At B2, reading needs timed pacing work, not more vocabulary.
The last month. Rehearse in the real shape. Single sittings, correct word counts, and at least one oral practice done tired rather than fresh.

- The four papers stay the same from A1 to B2. Duration, task counts, and output demands are what change.
- B2 is where the pattern shifts most noticeably: denser reading, an audio track embedded in the written text, and unprepared oral tasks.
- Word counts are fixed ranges, and missing them costs marks that have nothing to do with your Spanish.
