If your child is learning Spanish at school and you want it to count for something, the DELE Escolar is the exam built for them.
Most parents I speak to don’t know it exists, even though the DELE exam pattern at the Escolar level mirrors the adult one, even when their child is already in our Spanish courses for children. They assume the DELE is an adult exam, look at a general A2 paper from our DELE sample papers, full of workplace and services vocabulary, and reasonably decide their 13-year-old isn’t ready. What they’re actually seeing is the wrong version of the right exam.
The Escolar version tests to the same standard as the general DELE exam pattern, awards a diploma with identical recognition, and is valid for life. What differs is the world the questions live in: school, friends, family, hobbies, study, rather than offices and utility bills.
There’s also something new for 2026 worth knowing about. A B2/C1 Escolar exam has been added, first administered in May 2026, extending the young learners’ ladder considerably higher than before.
Here’s the full picture: levels, ages, how dual-level scoring works, the format at each level, dates, fees, and how to decide between the Escolar and general versions.
What Is the DELE Escolar Exam?
DELE Escolar is the Instituto Cervantes’ official Spanish diploma for students aged 11 to 17. Three exams exist: A1, the dual-level A2/B1, and the new B2/C1. The topics and situations are drawn from young people’s lives rather than adult working life, and the diploma carries the same value as the general DELE.
That last point is the one parents need to hear most. This isn’t a junior certificate or a stepping stone. It’s the same diploma system, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, with indefinite validity and international recognition.
What actually changes is the content. The Escolar exams cover the personal, public, and educational domains, with B2/C1 adding the professional domain. Text types range from notices, adverts, forms, informal letters and emails, and everyday narratives to, at a higher level, press articles, blogs, travel guides, and literary and academic texts.
So a 14-year-old is reading about school trips and friendships rather than mortgage renewals. Same difficulty standard, fairer subject matter.
No prior level or previous DELE is needed. A student can register directly for any of the three exams.

Who Can Take the DELE Escolar?
Students aged 11 to 17 are the intended candidates. The Instituto Cervantes also permits candidates who are 18 on the day of the exam to take it. Anyone older than that takes the general DELE instead.
That 18-on-exam-day allowance is a useful piece of flexibility, and it matters when a student’s birthday falls between registration and the exam.
Where families genuinely have a choice between a 16- or 17-year-old taking the Escolar or the general exam, here’s how I’d think about it:
Choose Escolar when the student is still in school, the content of adult exams feels alien to them, and the May or November timing works around their academic year.
Choose the general DELE when the student is heading into university or work soon, or when they need a session that the Escolar calendar doesn’t offer. The general exam runs across more sessions and more centers.
Either way, the diploma is equally recognized, so this is a comfort and timing decision rather than a value one. Parents weighing the wider benefits will find our Why Learn Spanish guide useful. You can also check the DELE schedule for this year.
How Do the Dual-Level Exams Work?
The A2/B1 and B2/C1 exams can award either level in a single sitting. Your four papers are grouped into two groups of 50 points each. The level you’re awarded is the one you reach in both groups. If your two groups reach different levels, you receive the lower one.
This is the cleverest feature of the Escolar system, and it removes the biggest risk in exam entry: picking the wrong level.
For the A2/B1 exam, each group is scored out of 50:
| Group score | Result |
|---|---|
| 0 to 19.99 | No apto |
| 20.00 to 35.99 | A2 |
| 36.00 to 50.00 | B1 |
For the B2/C1 exam, the thresholds per group are 24 points for a B2 and 36 points for a C1.
Work an example. A student scores 38 in Group 1 (reading plus writing) and 33 in Group 2 (listening plus speaking) on the A2/B1 paper. Group 1 reaches B1, Group 2 reaches A2. The awarded diploma is A2, the lower of the two.
Notice what that means in practice. The dual-level structure protects against outright failure but still rewards balance. A student strong in reading and weak in listening gets the lower level, exactly as in the general exam.
The A1 Escolar works differently, as a single-level exam. It needs at least 30 points in each group out of a total of 100.
Exam Format and Timings by Level
Here’s what each Escolar exam actually involves.
| A1 Escolar | A2/B1 Escolar | B2/C1 Escolar | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 45 min, 4 tasks, 25 items | 50 min, 4 tasks, 25 items | 75 min, 5 tasks, 32 items |
| Listening | 25 min, 4 tasks, 25 items | 30 min, 4 tasks, 25 items | 45 min, 4 tasks, 30 items |
| Writing | 25 min, 2 tasks (45 to 65 words) | 50 min, 2 tasks | 80 min, 2 tasks (150 to 180 and 180 to 220 words) |
| Speaking | 10 min + 10 min prep, 3 tasks | 12 min + 12 min prep, 4 tasks | 25 min + 20 min prep, 4 tasks, in pairs |
| Approximate total | 105 min | around 145 min | 225 min |
Two features of the B2/C1 exam stand out.
It’s long. Nearly four hours of testing. That’s a genuine stamina requirement for a 16-year-old, and it should be rehearsed with timing at least once before the day.
The oral test is in pairs. Unlike the general exams, B2/C1 Escolar candidates speak alongside another candidate. That changes preparation meaningfully. Students need practice interacting with a peer, not just responding to an examiner.
There’s one detail to confirm with your center: the Instituto Cervantes lists the A2/B1 listening paper as 30 minutes in its exam guide and 35 minutes on its exam page. Ask your center which applies to your session.
When Is the DELE Escolar Held in 2026?
DELE Escolar runs only twice a year. In 2026, the sessions are Friday 22 May and Friday 13 November, both offering all three Escolar exams. Registration for the whole of 2026 opened on 1 December 2025. Registration for the November session closes on 30 September 2026.
Two sessions a year are the main planning constraint for families, and it’s worth building the school calendar around.
| Session | Exam date | Registration closes |
|---|---|---|
| May | Friday 22 May 2026 | 8 April 2026 |
| November | Friday 13 November 2026 | 30 September 2026 |
Miss the November registration deadline in September, and the next opportunity is May 2027. That’s a long wait for a motivated 14-year-old.
Not every Indian center hosts the Escolar exams either, so confirm availability with your nearest DELE exam centers in India well before the deadline. Because the B2/C1 exam is new for 2026, availability may be narrower still in its first year.
Results follow the same timeline as the general exams, taking around two to three months. Our DELE results guide covers what to expect.
What Does the DELE Escolar Cost?
The Instituto Cervantes prices Escolar exams at the general price of their reference level. So the A1 Escolar matches a general A1, the A2/B1 Escolar matches a general B1, and the B2/C1 Escolar matches a general C1.
Applied to India’s 2026 fees, that means budgeting at the B1 rate for the A2/B1 exam and at the C1 rate for the B2/C1 exam, plus 18% GST. Parents should confirm exact Escolar figures with their center, because the published table lists Escolar columns separately, and centers are the reliable source for the current year.
Full level-wise figures and the GST calculation sit on our DELE exam fees in India.
Worth noting: the dual-level exams cost more than their lower-level counterparts because they’re priced at the upper level. That’s the price of the safety net, and given that a wrongly chosen single-level entry can mean a wasted fee entirely, it’s usually worth it.
Which Spanish Accents Appear in the Escolar Listening?
The A1 Escolar uses contemporary peninsular varieties. The A2/B1 Escolar uses different varieties of Spanish. The B2/C1 Escolar uses at least three geographic varieties per paper. Students may produce any consistent Hispanic norm in their own speaking and writing.
That progression matters for preparation, and it mirrors the general exams.
A student trained only on Spanish-accented audio will manage A1 comfortably and then struggle from A2/B1 upward when Latin American voices appear in the papers. This is one of the most common preparation gaps we see, and it’s entirely avoidable with the right listening material from the start.
On the output side, the rule is generous. Any Hispanic linguistic norm followed coherently and used by large groups of educated speakers is accepted. So a student who has learned Latin American Spanish can use ustedes throughout, as long as they’re consistent. We cover this properly in our guide to Spanish accents in the DELE.
Preparing a School Student for the DELE
Teaching teenagers for an exam is not the same as teaching adults, and pretending otherwise produces poor results.
What works, in my experience:
Short, frequent sessions beat long ones. Attention and retention both favor regular contact over marathon weekend classes.
Speaking has to feel low-stakes. Teenagers are far more self-conscious about sounding wrong than adults are. A small group where everyone is at the same level makes speaking possible. That’s why our children’s batches run with 6 to 10 kids, in the 8 to 17 age range, rather than large classes where the confident few dominate.
The content has to connect. Escolar topics help enormously here, because a student writing about a school trip is writing about their actual life.
Parents should hold the calendar, not the study. Two sessions a year means the registration deadline is the parents’ job. The daily work belongs to the student and the teacher.
We offer in-person Spanish for young learners in Noida and online Spanish coaching across India. The pathway is described on our Spanish courses for children page. Students moving up from Escolar to the adult ladder continue with DELE A2 coaching and our DELE preparation program.
What to Do Next
Three things to carry away:
- DELE Escolar is for ages 11 to 17, offered at A1, A2/B1, and the new B2/C1, and its diploma is worth exactly the same as the general DELE.
- The dual-level exams award either level from one sitting, based on the lower of your two group results, which removes the risk of picking the wrong one.
- It runs only in May and November, so the registration deadline is the date parents need to mark on the calendar.
