DELE B2 Reading Sample Papers: 36 Items, 14 in One Task

Quick summary: These DELE B2 Spanish reading sample papers cover all four tasks and 36 items in 70 minutes, with 14 items sitting in a single grammar gap-fill. Includes sample texts, answer keys, and a pacing plan built around the uneven item weighting.

Spanish DELE B2 reading sample papers

Every other DELE reading paper distributes its items evenly. B2 does not, and the imbalance should change how you prepare.

Thirty-six items across four tasks, split into 6, 10, 6, and 14. Task 4 alone carries 39% of the paper, and it is a grammar gap-fill rather than a comprehension task. Weighting is even across the other papers, which include the DELE B2 writing sample papers.

Which means the single highest-value thing you can do for your B2 reading score is review grammar. That is not intuitive advice for a reading paper, and it follows directly from the item distribution in official task descriptions published by Instituto Cervantes.

What are the 4 tasks in B2 comprensión de lectura?

The DELE B2 comprensión de lectura test lasts 70 minutes and has 4 tasks with 36 items. Task 1 has 6 multiple-choice items, Task 2 has 10 matching items, Task 3 has 6 sentence insertion items, and Task 4 has 14 gap-fill items. Reading load is 1,750-1,950 words.

TaskItemsShareTextFormat
Tarea 1617%One text, 400 to 450 wordsMultiple choice, 3 options
Tarea 21028%Four texts, 130 to 150 words eachMatch 10 statements to texts
Tarea 3617%One text, 400 to 450 wordsInsert 6 sentences from 8 options
Tarea 41439%One text, 400 to 450 wordsGap fill, 3 options per gap

Two administrative details from the guide. Reading is presented in the same booklet as listening, and answers go on a separate answer sheet. Correct answers score one point, incorrect answers score zero, and wrong answers are not penalized.

Reading sits in Group 1 with writing at B2, and the pair needs at least 30 points out of 50. Listening and speaking form Group 2. The grouping is identical to A1, A2, and B1, regardless of what some preparation sites claim.

These samples assume you already know the format. The DELE B2 reading guide walks through it before you start.

Where should the 70 minutes go?

Task 4 takes about 20 minutes because it has 14 items, and Task 2 takes about 18 minutes because it has 10 items across four texts. Tasks 1 and 3 need roughly 11 and 15 minutes, leaving about 6 minutes to transfer answers.

Tarea 16111.8
Tarea 210181.8
Tarea 36152.5
Tarea 414201.4
Transfern/a6Answer sheet

Look at the last column. Task 3 is the most expensive per item and carries the fewest points, while Task 4 is the cheapest per item and carries the most points.

That gives you a decision if time runs short. Sacrifice task 3, not task 4. Six items of sentence insertion at two and a half minutes each are the worst return in the paper, and insertion items are guessable from connectors even at speed.

Better still, do task 4 second, straight after task 1. Grammar decisions are the most fatigue-sensitive part of the paper, and 14 items are too many to leave for the last twenty minutes of a 70-minute test that follows nothing and precedes a 40-minute listening paper in the same booklet.

DELE B2 reading practice question answers

Sample paper 1: Tarea 1, texto informativo complejo

One text of 400 to 450 words with six three-option questions. Complex informative writing from public or professional contexts.

The text, abridged

Four of the six items

1. ¿De quién partió la iniciativa? a) De la biblioteca b) De una asociación vecinal c) Del ayuntamiento

2. ¿Qué temía el ayuntamiento? a) El coste b) El deterioro y la responsabilidad legal c) La falta de demanda

3. ¿Qué ha resultado inesperado? a) La edad de los usuarios b) El número de averías c) El interés de otros municipios

4. ¿Qué condición señala el responsable? a) Financiación europea b) Personal capacitado para el mantenimiento c) Un catálogo más amplio

Answers: 1 b, 2 b, 3 a, 4 b.

Three markers that locate the answers

La idea no nació de la biblioteca, sino de… gives you item 1. Lo que sí ha sorprendido es… gives you item 3. Su responsable advierte, no obstante, de que… gives you item 4.

At B2, the informative text signposts its own structure with no … sino, lo que sí, and concession verbs such as advierte, matiza, reconoce. Underline those three families as you read, and you will have found most of the six answers before checking the options.

Sample paper 2: Tarea 2, diez enunciados y textos

This is a shortened extract with three texts and six statements. The real task uses four texts and ten statements.

The specification for this task names two skills: locating specific relevant information and inferring feelings, attitudes, and evaluations. So roughly half the statements will not be findable by keyword.

The three texts

Lea los textos y relacione cada pregunta con la persona correspondiente.

A. Lorena

The six statements

¿Quién…

  1. …lamenta el dinero que invirtió?
  2. …cree que lo más valioso fueron las personas y no los contenidos?
  3. …tuvo dificultades para compaginar el estudio con otras responsabilidades?
  4. …cambió de opinión sobre su propia capacidad?
  5. …recomendaría esperar antes de matricularse?
  6. …encontró la experiencia más fácil de lo que esperaba?

Answers: 1 A, 2 B, 3 C, 4 C, 5 B, 6 A.

Which statements need inference

Statements 1, 3, and 6 are findable. Lorena says the price sigue doliéndome. Sara says the first months were insostenibles. Lorena says it was más llevadero de lo que imaginaba.

Statements 2, 4, and 5 are not.

Statement 4 changed her mind about her own capacity. Sara nunca usa las palabras “capacidad” ni “opinión”. She says creía sinceramente que ya no tenía cabeza para estudiar y descubrí que sí la tenía. You have to recognize that as a change in self-assessment.

Statement 5 would recommend waiting. Íñigo says: le digo que trabaje tres o cuatro años más y que entonces vuelva a plantearse. The word esperar never appears. The advice is expressed as a subjunctive instruction.

Statement 2: The people mattered more than the content. Íñigo says two things in separate sentences: “no por lo que me enseñaron” and “lo que sí me quedó fueron cuatro o cinco compañeros“. The statement combines them.

Method. Read all four texts once, properly, before looking at the statements, and note each writer’s overall stance in the margin: Lorena, positiva pero el precio / Íñigo, no le sirvió salvo los contactos / Sara, muy duro pero le cambió la autoimagen.

Then take the statements. The findable ones resolve instantly. The inferential ones resolve against your stance note rather than against the text, which is why writing the note is worth the ninety seconds.

Each text is used two or three times across ten items in the real task, so if one text has no answers, you’ve made an error.

Sample paper 3: Tarea 3, completar párrafos

One text of 400 to 450 words with six sentences removed. You replace them from a list of eight, so two options are decoys. This task tests whether you can rebuild the structure of an argument.

The text, abridged with gaps

The options

A. Unos los consideran imprescindibles para consolidar lo aprendido; otros, una intromisión en el tiempo familiar. B. Ese dato se repite en países con sistemas educativos muy distintos entre sí. C. Es decir, más deberes no equivale a más aprendizaje de forma indefinida. D. Los deberes se implantaron en Europa a finales del siglo XIX. E. Ningún país europeo ha prohibido los deberes por completo.

Answers: 1 A, 2 B, 3 C. Options D and E are decoys.

The three signals that solve every insertion item

Paired correlatives. Gap 1 needs the disagreement spelled out, and option A supplies it with unos … otros. The sentence after the gap opens with “Y sin embargo,” which only makes sense after two opposing positions have been presented.

Demonstratives pointing back. Option B begins. Ese dato, so whatever precedes gap 2 must state a finding. It does: the positive relationship from secondary school onward.

Reformulation markers. Option C opens with “Es decir,” which can only follow a claim it restates. Gap 3 sits right after the saturation point, and C restates it in plain terms.

And check the decoys for irrelevance rather than falsity. Options D and E are both true statements about homework that connect to nothing on either side of any gap. At B2, the decoys are usually accurate but structurally orphaned, which is exactly why reading the options first misleads you.

Sample paper 4: Tarea 4, 14 huecos de gramática

This is a shortened extract with 7 gaps. The real task uses a text of 400 to 450 words with 14.

The specification says Task 4 assesses the candidate’s ability to identify grammatical structures and draws its texts from literary, historical, and biographical writing. So expect narrative prose and expect the gaps to test syntax rather than vocabulary.

Reading is the densest paper at B2. The other three are in our DELE sample paper index.

The options

1. a) fue b) fui c) era 2. a) siguiera b) seguía c) sigue 3. a) los que b) lo que c) el que 4. a) parecen b) parecerían c) parecían 5. a) habría b) ha c) haya 6. a) pero b) sino c) sin embargo 7. a) en el b) al c) el

Answers: 1 a, 2 a, 3 a, 4 a, 5 a, 6 b, 7 a.

What each gap tests

GapStructureWhy
1Cleft sentenceLo primero que hice fue buscar. The verb agrees with lo primero, not with yo.
2Subjunctive after negated certaintyNo estaba seguro de que siguiera. Negating estar seguro triggers the subjunctive.
3Relative pronoun with human referentLos que me respondieron se refieren a personas. Lo que would refer to a thing.
4Present for a general truthTodas las casas parecen más pequeñas. A timeless observation inside a past narrative.
5Conditional perfectUn amarillo que mi abuela habría detestado. A hypothetical reaction from someone now absent.
6Sino after a negativeNo venía a molestar, sino a ver la casa. Correcting a negative, so not pero.
7Preposition plus articleSigue en el mismo sitio. Fixed with seguir plus location.

Gap 4 is the one candidates get wrong most often. The whole passage is in the past, so parecían feels right. But the sentence states something permanently true about childhood houses, and Spanish uses the present tense for that, even within a past narrative.

That’s the character of this task. Nothing here is obscure. Every item is a structure you have met. The difficulty is that fourteen of them arrive in a row, in narrative prose, and the surrounding tense pulls you toward the wrong answer.

The grammar that task 4 draws on

Fourteen items come from a predictable pool. Reviewing this list is the highest-return preparation available for the B2 reading paper.

  • Subjunctive triggers: negated certainty, para que, aunque with hypothesis, antes de que, el hecho de que, verbs of influence and emotion
  • Past tense contrast: preterite, imperfect, pluperfect, and the present for general truths inside past narrative
  • Conditional and conditional perfect: habría, sería, tendría que
  • Relative pronouns: que, quien, el que, lo que, cuyo, donde
  • Cleft sentences: lo que hice fue, fue entonces cuando, es por eso por lo que
  • Connectors and what follows them: sino, sino que, pero, a pesar de, aunque, por lo que
  • Prepositions with verbs and fixed phrases: seguir en, acordarse de, tratarse de, contar con, a raíz de
  • Ser and estar in participial and adjectival constructions
  • Pronoun position with infinitives, gerunds and imperatives

Working through that as a grammar review, separately from reading practice, is the structure we use in DELE B2 coaching, because treating task 4 as a comprehension exercise does not improve it.

Listening follows reading in the same booklet. DELE B2 listening sample papers cover what arrives next.

Where do B2 candidates lose reading points?

  1. Under-timing task 4. It accounts for 39% of the paper and routinely receives the least attention.
  2. Treating task 4 as reading practice rather than grammar review.
  3. Being pulled into the surrounding tense on gap-fill items. Gap 4 above is the classic case.
  4. Keyword hunting in Task 2 when half the statements are inferential.
  5. Noting each writer’s overall stance before answering task 2.
  6. Overspending on task 3, the most expensive task per mark in the paper.
  7. Leaving boxes blank. Wrong answers are not penalized, so a guess is always better.

Point three deserves emphasis. Candidates who know the grammar cold still miss two or three gap-fill items because the narrative tense around the gap creates a pull. The defense is to read the gapped sentence in isolation, decide what it needs, and only then check it against the paragraph.

A five-week B2 reading plan

Week 1, grammar audit. Work through the nine-point list above, one point a day, with a short gap fill after each. No comprehension practice at all this week.

Week 2, gap-fill volume. Take any Spanish literary or biographical text and blank out fourteen structures a day. Doing it to your own texts is faster than finding exercises.

Week 3: inference matching. Task 2 sets daily. Read all texts first, write the stance note, then answer. Track how many statements you got by keyword and how many by inference.

Week 4: insertion and speed. Task 3 daily, timed at fifteen minutes. Then one 450-word informative text a day for Task 1 practice.

Week 5, full papers. Three or four complete 70-minute papers with the pacing plan written out. Try one with task 4 done second and see whether the order helps. Work through the Cervantes DELE B2 Spanish practice exam at least once so you’ve seen the real layout.

Then review by task and by cause. Errors in task 4 mean grammar, not reading. Errors in task 2 usually mean you keyword-hunted. Errors spread across tasks 1 and 3 indicate pacing issues.

DELE B2 reading preparation with sample tasks and examples

Registering for B2 in India

DELE runs six times a year in India, in February, April, May, July, October, and November, at Instituto Cervantes New Delhi on Hanuman Road. The 2026 B2 fee is ₹8,000 before 18% GST. Registration usually closes six to eight weeks before each session, and results follow around three months later.

Reading comes first and shares a booklet with listening, so your 70-minute reading paper runs straight into 40 minutes of audio. Then 80 minutes of writing. Rehearse reading immediately followed by listening at least twice, because the 14-item gap fill is the part of the paper most damaged by starting tired.

Review grammar to raise a reading score

The DELE B2 reading paper puts 39% of its points in a grammar gap-fill. That single fact should reorganize your preparation: audit the nine structure families, drill fourteen-gap texts, and give task 4 the twenty minutes and the fresh concentration it deserves.

For the rest of the paper, remember that half of task 2 is inference rather than search, and that task 3 is the cheapest task to sacrifice if the clock beats you.

Want to know where your 36 items fall right now? Come and take a paper. Call us, message on WhatsApp, or visit the Sector 18 center in Noida for a timed B2 assessment before you register for a session. Four to six students per batch, and we work through every item with you.
