There are two numbers in the B1 scoring scale that decide whether your writing gets assessed properly at all.
Under 70 words on Task 1, or under 90 on Task 2, and the scale places your text in Band Zero. That’s the same band reserved for texts described as incomprehensible. Speaking carries no equivalent threshold, which DELE B1 speaking samples explain.
So length is not a stylistic preference at B1. It’s a gate. Everything below follows official assessment scales published by Instituto Cervantes.
What does B1 expresión e interacción escritas ask?
The DELE B1 written expression test lasts 60 minutes and has two tasks. Task 1 is a letter, forum message, or email of 100 to 120 words written in response to a text you’re given. Task 2 is a composition, article, or blog entry of 130 to 150 words, chosen from two options. Total output is 230-270 words.
| Task 1 | Task 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Interaction: reply to a given text | Expression: produce your own text |
| Target length | 100 to 120 words | 130 to 150 words |
| Band zero below | 70 words | 90 words |
| Choice | None | Two options, pick one |
New to this paper? The DELE B1 writing guide explains the task structure in plain terms.
How is the DELE B1 expresión escrita scored?
B1 uses an analytic scale rather than one overall impression. Examiners score separate criteria, including coherence and range of language, then combine them into your mark out of 25. Two graders assess each paper independently, and the average is taken.
Analytic scoring changes how you should write. On a holistic scale, one strong quality can carry a text. Under an analytic scale, a weakness in one criterion is scored on its own and cannot be hidden.
Two criteria are worth naming.
Coherence covers whether your text reads as a connected whole rather than a list of sentences. The scale explicitly marks down texts that amount to a series of clauses strung together with basic connectors like y and pero.
Range covers the balance of your vocabulary and structures. Repeating the same three phrases accurately scores lower than varying them with occasional imprecision.
So the two habits that lift a B1 writing score are paragraphing and using a variety of synonyms. Neither requires grammar you don’t already have.

Estudiar español en España, ¿dónde?
Hola a todos. En septiembre voy a pasar tres semanas en España para estudiar español. Es mi primer viaje a Europa y no sé qué ciudad elegir: Madrid, Salamanca o Valencia. ¿Alguien ha estudiado en alguna de estas ciudades? ¿Qué me recomendáis? Gracias. Lucas
En su respuesta debe:
- presentarse brevemente
- responder a la pregunta de Lucas
- contar su propia experiencia
- darle dos consejos prácticos
- despedirse

Hola Lucas:

What makes this a B1 answer rather than A2
It’s paragraphed. Four short blocks, each doing one job: introduction, recommendation, advice, close. An A2 answer runs as one block.
It uses the conditional to soften a recommendation. Yo elegiría “Salamanca” rather than “Elige Salamanca“. This is standard B1 register for giving advice to a stranger.
It builds cause and effect. Casi todo el mundo es estudiante, así que se hacen amigos con facilidad. And si no, acabarás hablando inglés. Two different consequence structures in one text.
It matches the register of the incoming message. Lucas writes: ¿Qué me recomendáis? Using vosotros, so he’s informal. The reply uses tú throughout. Answering a friendly forum post with usted would cost you.
It numbers the advice. Primero … Segundo … The prompt asked for two pieces of advice, and signposting them makes the task completion visible to the grader rather than something they have to hunt for.
The impersonal se is worth one use
Se hacen amigos. Se habla un español muy claro. Las escuelas se llenan.
Three uses of the impersonal and passive se in this short text. It’s the structure that most reliably signals B1 in writing, and it appears constantly in Spanish about places and general situations. One or two uses per task is plenty.

A model answer, Option A
142 words.
The architecture that fills 150 words
Option A gives you five bullet points and a specific shape. Follow it literally, and the word count takes care of itself.
| Bullet | Your move | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Present the topic | State the common view | 25 to 30 |
| Give your opinion | En mi opinión … en parte | 15 to 20 |
| Two or three reasons | La primera es que … La segunda es que … | 50 to 60 |
| One disadvantage | Sin embargo, hay una desventaja | 30 to 35 |
| Conclusion | En conclusión, creo que lo ideal es … | 20 to 25 |
That’s 140 to 170 before you write a word. If you’re running long, cut from the reasons. If you’re running short, add an example to a reason, because examples are the one thing you can always invent.
Choosing between Option A and Option B
The two options test different grammar, and the right choice depends on which you control.
Option A, the opinion text. Needs: en mi opinión, estoy a favor; sin embargo, en conclusión. Present tense throughout with a conditional in the conclusion. No past tense required.
Option B, the change-over-time text. Needs the imperfect for how things used to be (se trabajaba, la gente iba, no había), the present perfect for what has changed (ha cambiado, se ha convertido), and the future for a prediction (creo que habrá, va a ser).
Option B looks harder and is often easier to fill because antes… ahora… en el futuro is a self-writing structure. But it only works if your imperfect is solid.
Decide before exam day. Write both once, see which scores better, and commit. Candidates who choose in the exam room lose four or five minutes to indecision, and that’s most of a paragraph. Running both options as timed drills is part of DELE B1 classes for exactly that reason.

Atentamente, Rohan Mehta

The two structures that make this a B1 letter
Concede before you push. Entiendo que el problema no es suyo, pero yo pagué el curso completo por adelantado. Acknowledging the other side and then restating your position is a B1-level register reward.
Offer a fallback in the conditional. Si no hubiera plazas, les pediría la devolución. One conditional sentence signals the level clearly and satisfies pedir una solución concreta twice over.

143 words.
The three tenses this option requires
Imperfect for the old normal: significaba, salía, se sentaba, volvía, se resolvían.
Present perfect for recent change: se ha roto, han adoptado, se ha perdido.
Future for the prediction: irá, iremos.
Option A needs none of that. It runs in the present tense with connectors. So the decision between the two options is a decision about which tense system you trust under time pressure, and it should be made at home rather than in the exam room.
How should you split the 60 minutes?
Allow 25 minutes for task 1 and 30 for task 2, keeping 5 minutes at the end to count words and check verb endings. Task 2 is longer and carries no more weight, so resist giving it more than half the paper.
Inside those blocks:
Task 1: 25 minutes. Four minutes reading the stimulus and underlining every required point. Fifteen writing. Three counting and adjusting. Three checks.
Task 2: 30 minutes. Three minutes choosing your option, three sketching the paragraph shape from the bullet points, eighteen writing, three counting, three checking.
Read the stimulus text in task 1 twice. It contains a direct question you’re required to answer, and it sets the register you have to match. Both are marks.
B1 reading gives you 30 items in 70 minutes. Start with the B1 Spanish reading papers.
Connectors that carry a B1 text
Coherence is scored separately, and connectors are how you earn it. These are the ones worth having automatically:
| Function | Spanish |
|---|---|
| Add a reason | porque, ya que, puesto que |
| Add a consequence | Así que, por eso, lo que significa que |
| Contrast | sin embargo, en cambio, aunque |
| Sequence arguments | En primer lugar, la primera razón es que, además |
| Concede | Es cierto que … pero, aunque es verdad que |
| Give an example | Por ejemplo, como |
| Conclude | En conclusión, en resumen, por lo tanto |
Use six to eight across the paper, not the same two eleven times. The scale marks down texts held together only by y and pero, which is precisely what an unprepared B1 candidate produces under time pressure.
For where this level sits against the others, see what B1 certifies.
Which errors cost B1 candidates the most points?
- Falling under the thresholds. Below 70 words on Task 1 or 90 on Task 2 puts the task in band zero.
- Writing one block instead of paragraphs. Coherence is a named criterion.
- Ignoring the direct question in the Task 1 stimulus.
- Register mismatch. Usted in a friendly forum reply, or tú in a formal complaint.
- Present tense throughout Option B. The task is built on a past-to-present contrast.
- Repeating one connector. Narrow range is scored as narrow range.
- Skipping the disadvantage in Option A. It’s a bullet point, so it’s part of task completion.
Point five is the one I see most in B1 mock papers. Candidates who can conjugate the imperfect correctly in isolation write antes la gente trabaja en oficinas under time pressure, because the present is the tense their hand defaults to.
Weekly written tasks are marked the same way in the online Spanish writing class.
B1 listening gives you 30 items in 40 minutes. Start with the B1 Spanish listening papers.
A four-week B1 writing plan
Week 1. Task 1 only. One reply a day, 100 to 120 words, four paragraphs, all bullet points. Match the register of the stimulus every time.
Week 2. Task 2, Option A style only. Opinion texts with the five-part architecture. Force, sin embargo, and en conclusión into everyone.
Week 3. Task 2, Option B style only. Past to present to future. Nothing but antes, ahora, and en el futuro structures until the imperfect stops slipping.
Week 4. Full 60-minute papers, both tasks, three or four times. Use the official DELE B1 Spanish model exam at least once so you’ve seen the real booklet layout.
Then review against the analytic criteria rather than for general grammar. Ask four questions of each paper: is it paragraphed, did I hit every bullet, how many different connectors did I use, and is the word count inside the band.
Getting a second reader matters more at B1 than at A2, because coherence and range are hard to judge in your own writing. DELE papers graded come back with each criterion scored separately.
If the DELE calendar doesn’t suit your timeline, the SIELE assessment course covers a faster route to a comparable certificate.
The options open to learners in India are set out in Spanish certificates compared.

Registering for B1 in India
DELE sits six times a year in India, in February, April, May, July, October, and November, at Instituto Cervantes New Delhi on Hanuman Road. The 2026 B1 fee is ₹6,800 before 18% GST; registration usually closes six to eight weeks ahead, and results take about three months.
Reading and writing are taken in one block, reading first. That’s 70 minutes of reading immediately followed by 60 minutes of writing, so your composition gets written two hours into the morning. Practice the pair back-to-back at least twice, because a fresh-brain writing score is not the score you’ll get.
Write to the shape, then fill it
The B1 writing paper is not asking for creativity. It’s asking for a text that hits a word band, follows every bullet point, holds together across paragraphs, and varies its connectors. All four are mechanical, and all four can be trained in a month.
If you want your papers read by someone who scores coherence and range the way an examiner does, send us a sample or come in for an assessment. Call, message on WhatsApp, or visit the Sector 18 center in Noida. Four to six students per batch, and every written task comes back graded criterion by criterion.
