DELE A2 for Spanish Nationality: Rules, CCSE, Exemptions

Quick Summary: Spanish nationality by residence requires two certificates: a DELE diploma at A2 or above, and the CCSE test on Spain’s constitution and culture. Indian nationals are exempt from neither. The DELE never expires and can be taken in India. The CCSE expires after four years and is valid only in Spain. Almost every other Spanish visa route requires no Spanish at all.

Spanish DELE A2 for Nationality in Spain

Most people searching for the Spanish nationality language requirement want one straight answer: what must I prove, and by when? The rules are spread across three separate legal texts, which is why the internet gives you five different versions of them.

So let’s work from the law. Nationality by residence needs two certificates. One shows you can use the language, and that is the DELE A2 course level. The other shows you know how Spain works. Neither one alone is enough.

In 15 years of teaching Spanish, I have prepared learners for the A2 for very different reasons. Some are heading to Spain on a work transfer and want the diploma banked before they move, usually through online Spanish classes. Some are already there and counting residence years. Some professionals in India want a recognized A2 on their CV before moving on to B1.

This page covers the legal requirement, every exemption, what both exams involve, which visa routes need nothing at all, and the sequencing decision that saves people real money.

What Does Spanish Nationality Require, Language-Wise?

Spanish nationality by residence requires a DELE diploma at A2 level or above, plus the CCSE test on Spain’s constitution and social and cultural reality. Both are run by the Instituto Cervantes. The requirement is set out in Royal Decree 1004/2015 and Orden JUS/1625/2016.

The legal chain runs like this:

  • Ley 19/2015 created the electronic procedure for nationality by residence.
  • Real Decreto 1004/2015, article 6.1, sets the language bar at “como mínimo de nivel A2” and names the constitutional and sociocultural test alongside it.
  • Orden JUS/1625/2016, article 10, is the operative provision immigration lawyers actually cite. It lists the exemptions, sets the CCSE’s four-year validity period, and addresses minors.

Note the wording “como mínimo”. A2 is a floor, not a target. If you already hold a DELE B1, B2, C1, or C2, you have met the language requirement, and you do not need to take A2 as well.

One naming trap worth clearing up now. There is a DELE A2-NA exam, and “NA” stands for “no alfabetizados,” meaning non-literate candidates. It is widely misread as nacionalidad. It is an oral-only adapted exam, offered only in Spain, and it needs the Ministry of Justice’s authorization. There is no separate nationality version of the DELE. Literate applicants take the ordinary A2.

Who Is Exempt from the DELE A2?

Nationals of 20 Spanish-speaking territories are exempt from the DELE A2. So are applicants under 18, applicants whose legal capacity has been judicially modified, and holders of Spanish ESO or a higher Spanish qualification. Indian nationals are not exempt.

The full exemption list from Orden JUS/1625/2016:

Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea Ecuatorial, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, Uruguay y Venezuela.

Here is how the two exams treat each group, because the exemptions are not the same for both:

Three points that catch people out.

  1. Equatorial Guinea is on the list. Spanish is an official language there, so the language exemption applies.
  2. Portugal, the Philippines, and Andorra are not. Their nationals get a shorter residence requirement, which is a different benefit entirely.
  3. Being a native Spanish speaker exempts you only from the language test, not from the civics test. That catches Latin American applicants constantly.

A disability is not an exemption from either exam. You can request a reasonable accommodation with supporting documents at least two weeks before the exam date.

What Does the DELE A2 Exam Involve?

The DELE A2 tests four skills across about two and a half hours. Reading runs for 60 minutes with 4 tasks and 25 items; listening for 40 minutes with 4 tasks and 25 items; writing for 45 minutes with 2 tasks; and the oral test is 12 minutes, with 12 minutes of preparation and 3 tasks. Each skill is worth 25 points.

The scoring is where candidates lose control of their results.

Your four skills are bundled into two groups. Reading plus writing from Group 1, out of 50. Listening plus speaking from Group 2, out of 50. You need at least 30 in each group, and the groups do not compensate for each other. A candidate scoring 46 in Group 1 and 28 in Group 2 gets a No Apto.

Writing has fixed word counts you must hit: 60 to 70 words in Task 1, and 70 to 80 in Task 2. Going well over or under costs marks, and it is the cheapest mark on the paper to protect.

I see the same pattern year after year with Indian learners. Reading feels manageable because we read a lot. Then listening arrives at real speed, and the oral test asks you to talk to a stranger for 12 minutes. That is where the marks go. The fix is not more grammar; it is speaking from the first week.

You can check any practice score against the pass thresholds with our DELE pass calculator, and the task-by-task breakdown sits in our guides to DELE A2 speaking and DELE A2 listening.

What Is the CCSE Test?

The CCSE (Prueba de Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) is a 45-minute test on Spain’s constitution and its sociocultural reality. It has 25 questions across five task groups; you pass with 15 correct, and the result is reported only as Apto or No Apto, with no score shown.

It is not a language test. Your Spanish level is measured by the DELE. But the whole paper is written in Spanish, so you need enough reading ability to handle the questions. A comfortable A2 reader manages it.

The question distribution matters more than most people realize:

TaskTopicQuestions
1Government, legislation, and citizen participation10
2Rights, duties, and Spanish nationality3
3Territorial organization and geography2
4Culture, history, and traditions3
5Daily life and administrative procedures7

Tasks 1 and 5 carry 17 of the 25 marks between them. Culture and history, the part people fear most, are worth three. Study by mark weight, not by what feels interesting.

Then there is the part that makes the CCSE unusually kind. The Instituto Cervantes publishes a free manual containing the full bank of 300 questions from which your 25 are drawn, plus a free official app. The exam is effectively open-book, with the book published in advance. About a quarter of the questions change each year, so always download the manual for the year you are taking.

The fee is €85, and one registration covers up to two attempts if you fail or miss the first. Compare that with the DELE, where every attempt costs full price.

Can You Take the CCSE in India?

No. The CCSE runs only inside Spain, at Instituto Cervantes centers and a network of more than 200 examining centers across the country. The official calendar is labeled “solo en España”. Registration also requires an NIE, so it is not open to applicants living in India.

Two hard gates, and both are worth understanding before you plan anything.

Geography. There are no CCSE sessions outside Spain, and no overseas sittings are published.

The NIE. Candidates must register with a Spanish foreigner identity number. Without Spanish residency paperwork, you cannot complete the form.

That splits your two exams cleanly, and the split is useful rather than a problem:

  • DELE A2 can be taken in India at any authorized center, at Indian fees, years before you need it.
  • CCSE waits until you are living in Spain with an NIE in hand.

The CCSE runs ten times a year, always on the last Thursday of the month, with no sessions in August or December. Registration closes roughly three weeks before, and results arrive about 20 days after.

Which Spain Visa Routes Actually Need Spanish?

Almost none. The non-lucrative visa, the digital nomad visa, the long-term residence visa, and the student visa all carry no language requirement on paper. Nationality by residence is the only route that legally confers nationality. Arraigo social assesses your Spanish in an interview without requiring one.

RouteLanguage requirement
Non-lucrative residence visaNone
Digital nomad visaNone
Long-term residence (larga duración)None
Student visaNone from the consulate, but the university sets a level
Arraigo socialNo certificate, assessed in an interview
Nationality by residenceDELE A2 or higher, plus CCSE

The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi’s non-lucrative visa checklist includes no language requirement.

Two routes deserve a note.

Arraigo social has no certificate requirement and no named level, but your Spanish is evaluated during the social integration report interview. A DELE A2 or B1 helps as supporting evidence and, more usefully, means you can actually manage the interview.

Student visas confuse people the most. The consulate asks for nothing, but your visa file needs an admission letter, and the university asks for a level before it admits you. Spanish public universities generally want B2 for Spanish-taught degrees. We cover that fully in a study in Spain with DELE.

Which Certificate Expires, and Which Does Not

The DELE diploma has indefinite validity. It never expires, needs no renewal, and never has to be retaken. The CCSE certificate is valid for four years. So, on any nationality file, the CCSE is the certificate with a clock running, and the DELE is the one you can bank early.

This single asymmetry should drive your whole plan, and most people get it backward.

Because the DELE lasts forever, there is no such thing as taking it too early. Take it while you have teaching support around you, while the fee is lower, and while your schedule allows real study time.

The CCSE is the one to time tightly. Take it when your residence years are nearly complete, so the four-year window comfortably covers the day you file. People who clear it too early pay €85 twice.

If you pass one and fail the other, the certificate you passed stands. You only retake the failed one. Both simply have to be valid on the day you submit.

One more rule worth knowing: partial passes on the DELE do not carry forward. The Instituto Cervantes states clearly that group results are not saved for subsequent sessions. Clear Group 1 but miss Group 2, and you take all four papers again.

A Sequence That Saves Money

Indian nationals face the ten-year residence track, with no reduction. Nationals of the 20 Spanish-speaking territories qualify after two years, as do those from Portugal, the Philippines, and Andorra, but India is not on that list.

Ten years is a long runway, which is exactly why the language exam should not wait until the end.

  1. Build your Spanish to a genuine A2 level, with speaking and listening as strong as your reading.
  2. Take the DELE A2 in India. Lower fee, no expiry, and a teacher correcting you.
  3. Complete your years of residence with NIE and TIE in place.
  4. Download the free CCSE manual for the year you will take it, and drill the 300 questions by task group.
  5. Take the CCSE in Spain once your filing date is within the past 4 years.
  6. File the application with both certificates valid.

Steps 1 and 2 are the ones that take real months and the ones we can help with directly.

Many of our learners keep going past A2 anyway. Ten years in Spain is a life, not a paperwork exercise, and B1 is the level at which daily bureaucracy, medical appointments, and workplace conversations stop being exhausting.

Preparing for the DELE A2 from India

We run DELE A2 preparation in small batches of 6 to 10 students, in person at our Noida center or live online across India and abroad. You get regular speaking practice, regular individual feedback on writing, timed mock papers in the real format, and study material included.

Nationality candidates are a particular kind of learner. Usually busy, often nervous about speaking, and working to a real deadline rather than for pleasure. What works is a fixed-target session, backward planning from it, and enough oral rehearsal so the 12-minute interview stops feeling like an ordeal.

Most learners then continue on to the DELE B1 course, because that is where the diploma starts to open doors rather than just clearing a requirement.

What to Do Next

Three things to carry away:

  • Nationality needs a DELE at A2 or above plus the CCSE, and Indian nationals are exempt from both.
  • The DELE never expires and can be taken in India. The CCSE expires after four years, is available only in Spain, and requires an NIE.
  • Every other Spanish visa route requires no certificate at all, so the paperwork worry people carry is usually misplaced.
